Ivy Crown Community Services, Inc.

Ivy Crown continues to award academic scholarships to high school senior girls and those college students who have overcome significant adversities to become successful. Along with support from its' community partners, the organization has continuously held book distributions at inner city schools to help foster a love of reading, sponsored essay writing contest and held spelling bees as a part of the over 40 years in operation, Reading is Fundamental Program. The organizations also purchases shoes and socks for school aged children to ensure they will not miss school due to a lack of proper shoes. In partnership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Delta Lambda Omega Chapter, the group has financially supported and volunteered with local organizations such as the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Susan Komen's Race for the Cure, NW LA Sickle Cell Disease Association, American Heart Association, and the City of Shreveport's annual Paint Your Heart Out.

Reading is Fundamental has consistently put books in children's hands year after year. The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrate reading, writing, and stage presence by having the annual RIF essay contest and spelling bee which impacts over 300 scholars from over 10 elementary schools in Caddo Parish. The scholars beam with excitement at the event each fall as well at the parents and leaders who come out to support each student. I am thankful that Reading is Fundamental through the Ivy Crown Community Services. Shreveport is better for making reading first in our community.
