Shreveport Garden Study Club

A nonprofit organization

The Shreveport Garden Study Club was created in 1997 by 22 local women with a common interest in gardening.  The purpose of the Shreveport Garden Study Club is to stimulate the knowledge and love or gardening and to encourage civic beautification, conservation and preservation.

In 2008, the garden club was accepted into the Garden Clubs of America, which was organized in Philadelphia at Stanton, originally the colonial home of James Logan, where one of the earliest gardens in America was located. 200 member clubs are divided geographically into twelve zones. Zone IX is composed of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas, with a total of 2600 members.

One of the local projects of the SGSC is the restoration and maintenance of The Greenwood Cemetery including an Educational Pavilion, pond, pollinator garden, pergola and Babyland. These projects are funded in large part through the Friends of the Greenwood Cemetery which is multifaceted - the creation of a garden park within the city, a setting for the study of horticulture with emphasis on native plant materials in our Pollinator Garden, and the preservation of the cemetery.

The garden club is hosting the GCA Zone IX meeting and Flower Show this spring, March 31-April 2 headquartered at the Chamber of Commerce in downtown Shreveport.  Plan to ‘Fly and Flourish’ with us as we celebrate with all 20 clubs in our zone this spring and show off all the wonderful things Shreveport has to offer.

Mission

Our mission is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening, to share the advantages of association by means of educational meetings, conferences, and publications, and to restore, improve and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the field of conservation and civic improvement.
