Founded in 1997 by 22 women with a shared love of gardening, the Shreveport Garden Study Club (SGSC) stimulates the knowledge and love of gardening and encourages civic beautification, conservation and preservation.
A member of the Garden Clubs of America (GCA) since 2008, SGSC is part of Zone IX, representing clubs across the Southeast.
A cornerstone of SGSC’s work is the restoration and preservation of Greenwood Cemetery, including its pollinator garden, education pavilion, pergola, Babyland and historic grounds. Through the Friends of Greenwood Cemetery, the club supports conservation, horticultural education, and the creation of a meaningful garden park cemetery for the community.
In 2026, SGSC led a civic beautification project replanting Shreveport Roses at Riverview Hall, continuing its commitment to enhancing public spaces. Through the Civic Improvement Committee of the GCA, SGSC nominated a local educator and subsequently presented, Dionne Procell-Brown of Caddo Magnet High School, with the Elizabeth Abernathy Hull Award, recognizing excellence in environmental education and teaching.
Our mission is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening, to share the advantages of association by means of educational meetings, conferences, and publications, and to restore, improve and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the field of conservation and civic improvement.
