Organized by cancer survivors and their families, the League is guided by leaders who understand the emotional and financial issues faced by those dealing with cancer treatment. Beyond the issue of "Will I survive?" are more mundane but very stressful issues: Who can take me to my treatment? Can I afford the medications? How can I come to Shreveport from out-of-town? As patients struggle with finances and travel issues, they may not be able to receive care as recommended by their physicians.
The League's office is located in the Physicians Common building, 3300 Albert L. Bicknell Drive, Suite 3, across from the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center and provides care to patients undergoing treatment there, but it is not an affiliate of Willis-Knighton. Thus, memberships are critical to its growth as it seeks to serve large numbers of patients. As technology at the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center expands, more and more people from out-of-town will seek care at the facility.
The League offers incredible benefits for patients and their families who travel long distances to receive next generation radiation and chemotherapy at the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center. Through the generous gifts and efforts of many who support the League, the extra burden of travel and housing issues are no longer prohibitive. As a Cancer Center, we appreciate the League for working hard to address the needs of our patients, both those less fortunate and those who travel great distances to our center.
he League has a needs-based application process to help assure that the funding goes where the needs are the greatest. Formed in 2011, the League offers support of up to $500 per patient and anticipates being able to offer larger grants if needed as its membership grows and additional funding becomes available.
Distribution of grants to patients is provided following a careful review of applicants who are referred by their physicians. The League's patient services staff work with social workers at the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center to assure that the individual needs of patients are met in the most efficient and supportive manner.
